This is the Mezquita (Mess-kEEta), in Cordoba. Yes, back in Cordoba. The Mezquita is easily the most famous site in Cordoba, and we were going to go through it on our second day in Cordoba, which was at the beginning of our trip. But when we showed up, it was closed. Surprise! They were putting in a new Bishop, so the whole thing was closed. We were sad, and moved on to Sevilla. So we decided to go back to Cordoba (about three hours out of our way) between Granada and Toledo.
So glad we did. You can see that the Mezquita is unique. It’s a cathedral, but it’s built on top of a Visigoth temple, and later a Muslim Mosque. The arches everywhere make it unlike any other cathedral I’ve seen, but it’s still very much a cathedral. There are chapels all around the outside, and then a main… cathedral place thing… in the middle.
